Learning to Waterproof Boots
Prior to wearing boots in wet weather, you should take some steps to waterproof them. This article provides some tips on how to go about this particular project. For this cleaning project, you can make use of beeswax. The latter can easily be purchased at your neighbourhood craft store or discount shops.
Begin by removing any debris or clumps from your boots with a dry towel. Carefully wipe in areas that include a seam or a fold. Ensure that the leather is completely clean before applying waterproofing materials.
Choose a cleaner that is applied through a spray. Remember that all the dirt and dust should be gone and the leather should be completely clean. Apply the product in a well-ventilated area, holding the aerosol can about a foot away from the boot. Spray it in even, downward strokes.
Rub the beeswax onto your footwear using a clean, soft cloth. Make sure to do it in circular motions. This will ensure that the coating will be absorbed evenly. Pay close attention to the toe and heel.
When the polishing process has been completed, set the boots to dry overnight to allow the beeswax to penetrate the leather completely. The following day, remove any excess wax with a cloth. The products will create a protective coating that should last for approximately a year.
Remember to strip off the waterproof coat using leather soap and a slightly damp cloth. Let it dry completely before reapplying a fresh coat of beeswax to keep your footwear in the best condition.
