Caring for Leather Boots During the Winter Season
Although stylish and comfortable, leather boots can take a real beating during long winter months. The softer varieties can break down in wet conditions and get damaged from road salt. This article intends to provide some tips on how to preserve and protect them to be serviceable for more years of use.
Begin by taking your foot wear outside and brushing off any loose dirt or salt. Next, cover your work area with a clean, old sheet or a plastic tablecloth. That way, you can protect the surface from the cleaning solution that will be used, as well as the dirt on the bottom of the boots. Remember to place one hand inside the boot to keep it in shape as you apply shoe products.
Once you are done preparing your work area, wash the wood or synthetic heels and trim with mild soap and water. Scrub thoroughly with the use of a soft cloth before applying some of the leather cleaning solution. Rub gently in order to remove all traces of stains, paying particular attention to the soiled areas.
Lay boots on a work cloth or tile floor so that it can dry evenly. When that is done, polish each of the shoes until the leather has a soft rich glow. Stuff it with some tissue paper to help retain shape. Use an upholstery cleaner on thick or faux fur linings. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for fabric recommendations and applications.
Make it a habit to clean and spray your boots at least twice more during the season to maintain its suppleness during harsh conditions. Keep them away from direct sunlight and store in an environment with a carefully regulated temperature.
